SKIN CARE: What I’m Using While On Accutane

July 21, 2019

One of the downsides of Accutane is your skin texture and type can change a lot throughout the time you are taking it, and even after. I’ve always had oily skin, but ever since starting Accutane, I’ve become dry in my T-Zone and on my lips. Because of this, I’ve been adjusting what I’m using on my skin. I received some product recommendations from my dermatologist, and did a little research on my own. Below I’m going to share what I’m using from moisturizer to beauty products, and everything in between.

Moisturizer

DAY ROUTINE: During the day I always moisturize before I put on makeup, and before I leave the house. I love the Aveeno Positively Radiant Moisturizer because it’s really light on the face, and even has some SPF in it. As I mentioned in my Skin Update for July, it’s extremely important that I use sunscreen, even if I’m only going out for a few minutes. If I know I’ll be out for longer than 15 minutes, I layer sunscreen on top of these moisturizers. For the body, I’ve been using the Lubriderm Daily Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 15. It keeps my skin hydrated throughout the day, and I find I usually don’t need to reapply.
NIGHT ROUTINE: Before I go to bed I try to give my skin as much moisture as possible. I start with the Mario Badescu Facial Spray, because it has ingredients that will calm any inflammation on the skin. My next step is to apply some type of facial oil. I really love ones from Pacifica and Pearlessence. This one is Pearlessence Coconut Facial Oil. I also apply Vanicream all over my face and body. It was recommended by my dermatologist because it seeps really well into the skin, and is formulated specifically for those with sensitive skin. It feels a little greasy when I go to sleep, but my skin always feels nourished in the morning when I follow all of these steps.
*Follow up: Thank you to Sam-Says.blog for commenting below to let me know that a better alternative for a face spray would be a thermal spray from Vichy, Avene, and La Roche Posay! The essential oils and coloring in the Mario Badescu spray can aggravate skin, so those may be a better alternative.
LIP PRODUCTS: Oh boy I can’t even explain how dry my lips are. Of every side effect I’ve had from Accutane, this is by far the worst. I basically have a chapstick with me at all times. I found so far that these three work the best. Blistex Lip Balm and Sun Bum Lip Protectant both have SPF 30 in them, so I try to apply them if I know I will be outside. However, I’ve had the most success with Carmex. It’s the only one that will keep my lips hydrated for as long as possible. It prevents any cracking and breaking, which is really hard to stop these days.

Sun Protection

FACE & BODY SUNSCREEN: I like the Neutrogena brand sunscreens because they don’t feel as heavy as other sunscreens, and the fragrance isn’t as bothersome as other ones. I love the Beach Defense Lotion for all over the body, and the Clear Face Sunscreen because it doesn’t contain oils that cause breakouts.

Makeup

PRIMER & FOUNDATION: One of the first ways I saw my skin changing while on Accutane was when I wore foundation. Because my skin was so oily, my usual matte foundations were making my skin peel around my nose and on my chin. I decided to do a little research, and have found these four products to be my saving grace! I prime with the Benefit Porefessional Primer around my nose, and then I use the Becca Photo Filter Primer on my face. It’s extremely hydrating, yet still helps my makeup last longer. Then, I use Laura Mercier Oil Free Tinted Moisturizer all over. I usually have some acne and scars left to conceal, so I use a basic concealer to correct that. After I lightly set everything with powder, I apply the Morphe Continuous Setting Mist, and it brings my skin back to life. All of these products together combat the issue of dry skin, and help look fresh and radiant all day!
REMOVAL PRODUCTS: The last two products I want to mention are for makeup removal. I was told to use really gentle cleansers and removers, and I have used the Aveeno brand for years. The combination of the Ultra-Calming Gel Cleanser and Ultra-Calming Wipes helps avoid stripping the natural oils my skin is producing, prevents irritation, and is gentle enough on sensitive skin. I promise I’m not sponsored by Aveeno, I’m just obsessed with their products, and give them such a high recommendation to anyone looking for gentle skin care.

Those are all the products I’ve personally been using while on Accutane, and I hope this helps anyone with sensitive/dry skin, or someone also on Accutane! Let me know if you have any product recommendations for skincare. I’m always looking for something better when it comes to keeping my skin healthy. Up until recently I used the Simple wipes to remove makeup, then about a month ago I watched a video with Caroline Hirons. She said to go straight to the sink to take your makeup off and do a double cleanse. It cuts down the whole makeup removal process and your skin does feel really fresh and clean. Really enjoyed your post by the way ☺️ X

Thank you for sharing this information! As someone who had adult acne in her early 30s and got the shock of her life, I too had to endure dry skin and lips for a grueling 8 months. I wish I had known your tips back then, they are so useful! Good luck with the treatment!

Be careful with Mario badescu. It’s full of fragrance which can irritate skin.

If it’s the chamomile and lavender it has lavender oil high up and essential oils can be aggravating also as can synthetic colouring. Might be best to try something like thermal water instead

Vichy, avene and la Roche posay all have thermal water. Blistex relief cream is amazing for lips.
